This was my second backpacking trip and it changed a lot about my thoughts on backpacking. Jenny had gone with Bill and I the first trip, but not on this one. We decided to go the extra couple miles from Buck Island into Desolation Wilderness to Rockbound lake. No fires are allowed here. Also, it was earlier in the year so there was still snow on the ground and water flowing on the trail.
Bill had seriously hurt his back the year before, and I was glad to be going out again. But I had gained some weight and was out of shape for the hike. While up at the top of a peak relaxing by myself, I vowed to find a way to reduce my pack weight so that I didn't have so much trouble hiking in. I was tired of carrying a 50 pound pack and so after this trip I looked seriously into ultralight backpacking.
