Today was my first time soloing REALLY alone. Nick was probably still asleep. I got in at 8:00am and the winds were 310 at 3...perfect! I did three full-stops on 28L, 3 touch-and-goes on 28L, one full-stop on 28R (the last one) and a go around. Funny story on the go-around. I started in the pattern ahead of another Cessna, but after executing a couple full-stop landings, I was behind him. This Cessna was extending his upwind and downwind legs considerably, so the going was slow. I wanted to practice a short approach with simulated engine failure, but this guy's downwinds were so long I couldn't get the spacing for the short approach. Figuring a go-around on short final would allow me to cut ahead of the other Cessna who was still going upwind, I asked for a go-around from the tower. Unfortunately, they told me to follow the Cessna upwind! Now not only was I still behind him, but now I was even closer to him!
Next time around I did a full-stop with a slow taxi-back. Knowing the guy would extend his downwind I timed my taxi and call to the tower until he was abeam the numbers, which would give me the maximum amount of space in front of me without the possibility of my having to hold short for the Cessna (again). The plan worked and with enough space for a short approach I executed a very good simulated engine failure landing!
It was certainly a blast and I really enjoyed the feeling of being free of my instructor (no offence Nick). Though he is a great guy and an excellent instructor, flying with freedom is what I've been waiting for for 13 years, and finally the time has come :)
There was bad news, as indicated by the title. On the way home from the airport I ran over a piece of metal and blew a tire. Oh well, I guess you take the good with the bad.
