Best Man Speech

I don't know if I'll ever be another best man, but if so I want to have a good speech of advice ready.

You two have found your perfect match and I'm so happy that you've tied the knot. Marriage is the biggest step two people take together, making a commitment that lasts for the rest of your lives. I've been so fortunate to have been happily married to my wife and best friend for N years. And over those years I've learned a lot about what it takes to maintain a happy marriage. I'd like to impart some advice for you both.

First is faithfulness. Now that you've found each other, know that there are not and will never be other fish in the sea. Live this mantra in times of strength and weakness, joy and anger, and your marriage will flourish.

Second is fallibility. Nobody is perfect. Look deep in yourself to learn when you are wrong. Constantly seek out your failings and weaknesses and never stop working to improve yourself. Such efforts will pay off a hundred-fold in your marriage.

Third and finally are the little things. Learn those little things you do that make your spouse think, "wow, you are so great". It's those little things, like neck massages, holding the door open, and leaving the TV on their favorite channel before you turn it off. Do these small gestures willingly, lovingly, and without complaint or expectation of reward.

Heed these three nuggets of advice for a happy marriage. As your bodies grow older, which I'm sure you think will never happen, your love for each other will grow ever stronger. Cheers.
