Cross-Country Joyrides: Introduction

AvMap2010.jpg

It's a new year, and I have an aviation-related resolution. I want to make a landing at all of the publicly-accessible Colorado airports east of the Rockies, and I also want to visit all of the bordering states east of the Rockies. The whole point is to expand my personal limits a little bit, and to have some fun.

There are 38 publicly accessible airports in Colorado east of the foothills in Colorado, including Denver International. Landing at DIA may not be possible or advisable if there are landing fees, and especially if a small plane might disrupt operations. So I'd be okay not doing that one. As for the states, I want to land at airports in Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. This would add six states to a new lifetime goal that I have of landing an airplane in all 50 states.

To keep track of my progress I added a map to the right sidebar of this website. I also added a map for states I've played golf in. Flying in all 50 states is more of a challenge than golfing in all 50 states. That's because there would be many times when I'd have to rent a plane in a region solely for the purpose of adding states to my list, and each club requires a club checkout. Maybe someday I'll own an airplane that has enough power and comfort that we could fly around the country. Even so Hawaii and Alaska will probably still require renting.

The thumbnail for this post is what my flying progress map will look like when I'm done with this plan.
